How to use an interpreter
Talk directly to your partner You should communicate directly with your speaking partner. It is not necessary to add "tell him" or "ask her" to the message. The interpreter will communicate the message in first person, such as saying "I like your product" rather than "He says he likes your product."
Speak naturally and give necessary clarifications
- Speak at your normal pace. Interpreters will ask you to slow down or repeat if necessary
- Clarify unique vocabulary, technical terms, jargon and so on
- Avoid long sentences or giving too much information at a time. Three or four short sentences are usually the maximum an interpreter can handle accurately.
Everything will be interpreted!
- The interpreter is like a tool: whatever the interpreter hears will be interpreted
- Do not ask the interpreter to censor any portion of the conversation. The interpreter translates and is no councilor or advisor
- ú Do not have any private conversations with the interpreter. This is not very polite to the partner with whom you are talking
- Avoid asking the interpreter for opinions or comments regarding the content of the conversation
One person should speak at a time
- An interpreter can only interpreting from one side at a time
- Wait until the interpreter finishes talking, do not speak while the interpreter is interpreting
Don't push the limits of the interpreter
- Keep the pace comfortable and reliable
- Monitor the quality of communication. Stop and make adjustments at the first signs of miscommunication.
- The closer you can maintain an even pattern and keep focused on your talking partners, the more the interpreter will magically seem to disappear from the conversation.
